Angela Rayner responds to landlord Jeremy Hunt's involvement reforming ground rents despite recusing himself

Angela Rayner MP, Labour's Deputy Leader and Shadow Secretary of State for Housing, responding to news that landlord Jeremy Hunt is actively involved in decisions on reforming ground rents despite recusing himself, said: 

“Time and time again, the Tories have failed to stand up for renters and leaseholders because it would hurt them in the pocket. From endless delays to no-fault evictions, to failure to sort unaffordable ground rents, this government is on the side of Tory landlords on their benches not on the side of working people. 

“The Chancellor now has serious questions to answer about his involvement in determining crucial policies on ground rents and whether they would have a direct personal impact on his vast property portfolio. 

“Jeremy Hunt must publish any guidance he has received on conflict of interest to determine how on earth he can remain independent in this case.”
