NEU comments on Ofsted Sub-Judgements

Commenting on the decision by Ofsted to display school sub-judgements on its inspection reports web page, Daniel Kebede, General Secretary of the National Education Union, said: 

"Parents do need a more rounded impression of a school's achievements but the NEU does not believe this moves us towards that aim. This is merely a reframing of existing information which does not get to the heart of the matter. So-called 'sub-judgements' are not valid or effective indicators of a school's qualities, and so this is not going to speak to the pressing issues. 

"We need to see an end to the corrosive single-word judgements altogether. The recent ‘Beyond Ofsted' inquiry points a way forward for a better inspection system that is supportive, effective and fair. The current inspection system is closely linked to the retention issues of school leaders and teachers which is why there is simply no time to waste in making proper change."
