Shabana Mahmood comments on watchdog’s warning over prison early release for violent offenders

Shabana Mahmood MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, commenting on HM Chief Inspector of Prisons’ warning that violent offenders are being released early from jail on the Tories’ watch, said:

“It’s extraordinary that watchdogs are now sounding the alarm on the potential risk to public safety, created by the Tories’ prisoner early release scheme.

“On Rishi Sunak’s watch, burglars, thieves and domestic abusers will be out on our streets up to two months earlier than planned, putting huge pressure on probation.

“The public deserves to know about the scale of these unprecedented changes, but the Conservatives are determined to roll out this scheme in secret.

“A Labour government would get these new prisons built to ease the capacity crisis, make sure they work to cut crime, and deliver on our mission make Britain's streets safe.”
