The SNP has called on the UK Chancellor to deliver a substantial
package of support to the people of Gaza.
It follows criticism of the UK government for failing
to meet their international aid
targets, reducing the percentage of GNI on foreign aid
from 0.7% to 0.5%.
Following the ruling from the International Court of
Justice, aid into Gaza was supposed to increase however,
according to the UN, February registered a 50% reduction in
humanitarian aid entering the region compared to
January.
Additionally, Israel’s blockade means that critical items such as
scalpels and oxygen tanks have been banned from entering
Gaza.
The UNRWA has not been able to enter Northern Gaza since the
23rd of January, in part due to the UK government's decision to
pause its funding.
Commenting, the SNP’s Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Brendan
O’Hara MP said:
"Westminster is failing the people of Gaza by not increasing
aid, as ruled by the International Court of Justice.
"Israel’s blockade of aid to Gaza must end, and the UK
government must finally commit to
a substantial aid package.
"Over 30,000 Palestinian children and civilians have already been
killed - and vast swathes of Gaza have been obliterated,
including hospitals and family homes.
"The time for equivocating is over, and action is needed now.
Enough is enough. This has to end - and it has to end now."
