LGA responds to AA survey on October pothole breakdowns

Responding to an AA survey on pothole breakdown call-outs for October, Cllr Darren Rodwell, transport spokesperson for the Local Government Association, said:

“Investing in cost-effective and resilient roads resurfacing, rather than retrospectively dealing with potholes, is a priority for councils.

“There are 186,000 miles of local roads in England and an estimated £14 billion backlog of repairs. The recently announced extra £8.3 billion of funding will help with bringing more of our local road network up to scratch, including reinstating repairs for potholes that had been impacted by inflation.

“Longer-term, the Government should award council Highways Departments with five yearly funding allocations to give more certainty, bringing councils on a par with National Highways so they can develop resurfacing programmes and other highways improvements, tackling the scourge of potholes.”
