‘Vital that children’s services are adequately funded in next week’s Autumn Statement’ – LGA response to children in care figures

Responding to the looked after children figures released today showing councils are supporting record numbers of children in care, Cllr Louise Gittins, Chair of the Local Government Association’s Children and Young People Board, said:

“These figures emphasise how vital it is that next week’s Autumn Statement ensures that children’s services are adequately funded so councils can meet this rising demand and ensure children and their families get the support they need, as soon as they need it.

“Councils continue to innovate in order to reduce costs, but further funding is required in order to meet demand.”

The LGA’s Autumn Statement submission warns that councils in England face a funding gap of £4 billion over the next two years. In its submission to the Chancellor, the LGA said the Government needs to provide immediate funding so councils can deliver the 2023/24 budgets they set this year and ensure that councils have sufficient resources to set balanced budgets next year without having to make drastic cuts to services.  

It is accompanied by appendices on key areas of council activity that are experiencing sharp financial and/or demand pressures (adult social care, children’s services and housing and homelessness support).
