Scottish Labour are nothing more than a “toothless branch
office”, the SNP has said, after a leaked email from Labour’s
Scottish General Secretary lays bare the tensions within the
party.
The email from the Labour leadership stipulated that a UK Rule
Book, which was agreed at the UK Labour conference, “trumps” all
other rules in the Party – including those for local parties in
Scotland.
In the leaked email, reported by the Daily Record, Mr McHugh
stressed that Scottish Labour does not have devolved powers on
constituency local party (CLP) rules.
Party members are reportedly furious, with this latest branch
office swipe following on from recent rifts between Labour
members in Scotland and Labour HQ in London over calls for a
ceasefire in Gaza, and the scrapping of the punitive two-child
benefit cap.
Commenting said:
“This is yet more evidence that Scottish Labour is nothing
more than a toothless branch office forced to fall in behind
their bosses at Westminster.
"Scottish Labour politicians can stomp their feet in
protest, but it's and his team in London who
call all the shots - and it always will be under this broken
Westminster system.
"Behind the scenes, Labour members are tearing themselves
apart on this issue and no wonder. If the party can’t agree on
the policies within their own local constituency branches, what
hope do they have for delivering for communities in Scotland?
“The SNP is the only party that will always put the
interests of the people of Scotland first."
