The Chancellor has responded to ONS Q3 2023
GDP statistics.
"High inflation is the single greatest barrier to economic
growth. The best way to sustainably grow our economy right now is
stick to our plan and knock inflation on its head. The Autumn
Statement will focus on how we get the economy growing healthily
again by unlocking investment, getting people back into work and
reforming our public services so we can deliver the growth our
country needs."
, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor
of the Exchequer, responding to this morning’s GDP figures,
said:
“These figures are further evidence that the economy is not
working under the Conservatives and working people are worse off.
“At the start of the year, and promised to get the economy
growing. These figures show that growth is flatlining and the
British people are paying the price, with 25 Tory tax rises and
higher mortgages.
“Labour has a plan to make working people in all parts of the
country better off by growing the economy, boosting wages and
bringing down bills.”

Union body warns that UK is “teetering on the brink of
recession”
Commenting on today’s (Friday), GDP figures, which show zero
growth in the third quarter of 2023, TUC General Secretary
Paul Nowak said:
“Working people are paying the price for Tory failure.
“Today’s dismal growth figures - with household, government and
business spending all falling - is yet more evidence of their
economic mismanagement.
“The outlook is bleak. The UK is teetering on brink of recession
with unemployment rising and no real green shoots on the horizon.
“We can’t go on like this. Jobs and livelihoods are on the line.
“We need a serious plan for jumpstarting our stagnant economy.
That means a proper industrial strategy and investment in green
infrastructure and public services.
“And this means a change of government.”
GDP: The UK economy is
on life support - Unite reaction
GDP is estimated to have shown no growth between July and
September according to the Office for National Statistics
Commenting on the latest GDP figures, Unite general secretary,
Sharon Graham said: “Our economy is on life support. The impact
of successive interest rate rises are hammering the UK. Both the
government and the opposition appear determined to stick to real
terms spending cuts, so there’s no good news for hard-pressed
workers.
“In the real world workers and communities know how the economy
is doing they can feel it . It's time for politicians to
decide whose side they’re on and make the changes the economy
needs.”
Remade responds to the
latest GDP statistics
Responding to the latest GDP statistics , founder and campaign
director for pro-growth campaign group Britain Remade, said:
“The latest news on the state of the economy should be a wakeup
call for everyone in Government.
“Ministers need to attack head on the root cause of our stagnated
economy. Whether it is the railways and roads we need to connect
our towns and cities, the data centres that will power the AI
revolution, the homes we need to attract world leading scientists
to our labs and R&D facilities or the wind turbines and solar
farms that will deliver the clean domestic energy to power the
growth, it is the sluggish and out-data planning system that is
holding Britain back.
“If we want to see the growth that will deliver the jobs we all
want to see created Ministers must act now before Britain is left
behind.”
