One week on from Hamas’ abhorrent terrorist attack in Israel, the
Prime Minister is continuing to coordinate cross-government
efforts to support Israel and protect civilians caught up in the
violence, prevent regional escalation and ensure Jewish
communities in the UK feel safe.
On Sunday, the Prime Minister met King Abdullah of Jordan at
Downing Street for important talks on responding to Hamas’ attack
and ensuring regional security, including preventing an
escalation of violence in the West Bank and Lebanon. He will hold
further talks with key international partners, including regional
leaders, in the coming days.
Today [Monday 16th], the Prime Minister will undertake
a visit in the morning to demonstrate the Government’s continued
support for the Jewish community and zero-tolerance for
antisemitic abuse. It follows a roundtable with police chiefs
chaired by the Prime Minister and Home Secretary at Downing
Street last week and the announcement of a further £3 million in
funding for the Community Security Trust (CST).
Later in the day, he will give a statement to Parliament
reiterating the UK’s total condemnation of Hamas’ attack and
setting out the Government’s approach to the developing crisis.
The statement will reflect on the seismic strategic implications
of last week’s events for the wider Middle East and lay out the
UK’s multi-pronged assistance to Israel and efforts to support
British nationals caught up in the violence, as well as our
response to the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and
diplomatic role in preventing further escalation.
