Shabana Mahmood MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, responding to damning whistleblower testimony of life inside the government’s new flagship prison, said:

“These out-of-control scenes are irrefutable evidence that the Tories have brought our prison estate to breaking point.

“Under the Tories, prison staff are working in conditions where they fear for their lives, and prisons are a breeding ground for more crime.

“The government needs to urgently get on top of the securing our prisons. Labour will prioritise delivering all 20,000 prison places that the Tories have failed to deliver, get a grip of the prison system, and ensure public safety.”
