MP, Labour’s Shadow Home
Secretary, responding to new statistics published today by
the ONS and the Home Office on crime and crime outcomes, said:
“Today’s crime stats show that serious violence is rising, over
90% of crimes aren’t being solved and confidence in policing
under the Tories has plummeted. The Tories are completely
failing on law and order and are letting communities down.
“Under this Government, more criminals are being let off and more
victims are being let down. Labour will put 13,000 more
neighbourhood police and PCSOs on our streets, with a mission to
halve knife crime and violence against women to keep our
communities safe.”

Notes to editors:
-
The Tories are weak on crime and weak on the causes of crime.
-
Knife crime and gun crime are rising. Yet the number of
crimes that are dropped without even identifying a suspect
has hit a record high, more victims than ever are giving up
on the criminal justice system, and a record half of the
population say they never see the police on the beat in their
area.
-
The proportion of crimes charged has plummeted since 2015 and
police referrals for fraud are still falling.
-
These failures have created a crisis of public confidence in
policing, which has fallen to its lowest level in 16 years.
