Shell CEO claims cutting oil production “dangerous and irresponsible” says Greenpeace

Commenting on Shell CEO Wael Sawan’s claim that reducing oil production is “dangerous”, Charlie Kronick, Senior Climate Advisor at Greenpeace UK, said: “Wael Sawan knows full well that climate change is the most dangerous threat currently facing humankind and to pretend that he’s drilling for oil for the sake of Pakistani and Bangladeshi school children - who are already suffering immensely from climate change isn’t just disingenuous, it’s disgraceful. Since Shell announced almost £8 billion in quarterly profits just two months ago, extreme weather events linked to climate change have wreaked havoc across the world, from devastating wildfires across Canada to cyclones in South Asia.

“Shell is gaslighting consumers while cashing in on energy price rises, increasing shareholder dividends and slashing investment in renewable energy, which can provide cheap, clean power across the world. Fossil fuel greed is endangering us all; we need urgent global action to force Shell and the wider oil industry to stop drilling and start paying for the damage they are causing to our planet and those who live on it.”
