The Competition and Markets Authority’s response to government’s White Paper, ‘AI regulation: a pro-innovation approach’

The CMA has responded to government’s consultation on its white paper AI regulation: a pro-innovation approach. The consultation sought views on its proposal to adopt a principles based approach to regulating AI in the UK.

The CMA stands ready to support government in considering the best regulatory approaches to AI relating to our remit. In our response, we discuss how our remit relates to each of the cross-sectoral principles in government’s proposed framework. We also highlight our efforts to create coherence between regulators, build expertise in technology and AI, and contribute to public understanding of developments in AI as they relate to competition and consumer protection, such as our ongoing initial review into foundation models.
