The Prime
Minister opened Cabinet by thanking the Secretary of State for
Culture Media and Sport for her department’s work on delivering
an exciting and successful Eurovision song contest on behalf of
Ukraine.
He then
updated Cabinet on his meeting with President Zelenskyy at
Chequers yesterday. He said the President thanked him for the
UK’s ongoing support which remained world
leading.
The Prime
Minister said he would use the Council of Europe today, and the
G7 later this week, to push for agreement on what further support
can be provided to both help the Ukrainian people defeat Putin
right now and ensure they have the appropriate deterrents so this
can never happen again.
He added that
he would also discuss the global challenge of illegal migration
with leaders at both events, with the number of cases rising
significantly across Europe last year.
Turning
to the Farm to Fork summit, taking place in Downing Street this
morning, the Prime Minister said the event will focus on how government and industry
can best work together to grow a thriving food sector here in the
UK.
He said this
was not about some nostalgic vision of the UK’s rural past, but
about growing the economy, creating more jobs, and building the
UK’s food security.
The
Environment Secretary talked Cabinet through the headline
policies to be announced at the Summit, including protecting UK
food and production standards in trade deals, and making it
easier for farmers to diversify their incomes by repurposing
their buildings to use as shops.
The Prime
Minister concluded Cabinet by saying that it is crucial we
continue this important work to provide an even stronger offer
for farmers as they help grow the economy.
