Chancellor visits Japan to promote investment and attend G7 meetings

• Chancellor Jeremy Hunt will visit Tokyo to meet with business leaders and encourage increased investment in the UK
• He will also attend the G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Niigata, along with Deputy Governor of the Bank of England John Cunliffe
• G7 Ministers will focus on tackling global economic challenges and supporting developing countries.

Tuesday

• The Chancellor will arrive in Japan and attend the Coronation Reception at the British Embassy in Tokyo.

Wednesday

• Chancellor will meet with political and business leaders, including Taro Aso former Prime Minister of Japan and members of Keidanren, the Japanese Business Federation

Thursday

• Chancellor will attend a number of meetings with business leaders before departing to Niigata for the G7 conference
• He will attend G7 meetings for the afternoon

Friday

• Chancellor will attend G7 meetings all day.

Saturday

• Chancellor will attend G7 events in the morning, signing the joint communique and closing the meeting. He will then return to the UK

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said:

“Japan is one of the world’s largest economies; last year trade between Japan and the UK was worth more than £28 billion and I want to see that figure increase. Japan is a powerhouse for technology and we want even more investment in the UK from Japanese firms, helping deliver on our priority to grow the economy.

“I’m also looking forward to the G7 meetings where I’ll be working with international partners to tackle global problems including high inflation, as well as finding ways to support developing countries, for the benefit of the whole world.”
