alcohol related deaths
New research shows a link between the SNP policy on minimum
unit pricing (MUP) and a drop in alcohol health harms.
The study, published in The Lancet, suggests the SNP
Government's policy on minimum unit pricing (MUP) has led to a
13% drop in alcohol-related deaths in Scotland.
The pricing policy was introduced in 2018 – after
sustained parliamentary opposition and then legal efforts to
block it – and put a minimum charge of 50p on each unit of
alcohol. Today's research suggests 156 deaths per year in
Scotland may have been prevented and 411 fewer hospital
admissions as a result of MUP.
Commenting, SNP MSP , who is a former NHS nurse,
said:
"Minimum Unit Pricing is a world-leading policy
and an important part of the action the SNP is taking to
tackle alcohol-related harm – and I am very pleased
to see that it is having positive results.
"Given the importance of reducing inequalities across a number
of public health areas, it is particularly good to see that the
policy is having an effect in Scotland’s most deprived
areas.
"It is bold and innovative policies like this that illustrate
the meaningful legacy the First Minister leaves as she steps
back from the Scottish Government, and that will have a long
lasting, positive impact on the lives of people across
Scotland."
