Skills needs for future job demands to be investigated by new Lords Education for 11–16 Year Olds Committee

A new House of Lords committee has been appointed to consider education for 11 to 16 year olds, focussing on making education enriching and ensuring the education system is designed to develop the skills needed to meet future job demands.

The Education for 11–16 Year Olds Committee, chaired by Lord Johnson of Marylebone, consists of members with experience in the education and skills sector including; former teachers, Secretaries of State for Education, education administrators and advisors, council leaders and School Governors.

The inquiry will look at:

• the current curriculum and the extent to which it needs to change to help close the skills gap
• the effectiveness of the assessment system
• the needs of the teaching workforce to help them feel supported, valued, and engaged
• funding mechanisms.

Throughout its inquiry, the committee will take evidence from a range of witnesses including teachers, students, and experts before publishing its findings and recommendations to the government in November 2023.
