For Londoners, the potential introduction of smarter,
pay-as-you-drive road charging would be the biggest change in how
daily transport is paid for since the introduction of Oyster and
the Congestion Charge 20 years ago.
The Mayor’s updated Transport Strategy (MTS) has added more
definition to plans for the future development of smarter road
charging to: “address the triple challenges of toxic air
pollution, the climate emergency and traffic congestion.”
The London Assembly Transport Committee is
meeting to examine a number of practical issues around the
potential introduction of smarter pay- as- you- drive road user
charging in London, with a focus on policy makers and advisors
from London and elsewhere. They will ask questions about the
technology that could be used, costs and timescales, as well as
fairness and rights and equalities issues.
It is the second meeting in a two-part investigation. At the
first meeting the Committee heard from experts, campaigners and
road user groups to better understand their concerns and
questions. The Committee has also published a call for evidence
as part of its investigation.
The London Assembly Transport Committee will meet at
10am on 28 February 2023.
The meeting will be used principally for a question and answer
session with the following invited guests regarding road user
charging in London:
-
Christina Calderato, Director of Transport
Strategy and Policy, Transport for London
-
Michael Roberts, Chief Executive, London
TravelWatch
-
Sandeep Shingadia, Director of Strategic
Partnerships & Delivery Integration, Transport for West
Midlands
-
Steve Gooding, Director, RAC Foundation
The meeting will take place at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way,
London, E16 1ZE. Members of the public are welcome to attend in
person or to watch the webcast here.
