A Department for Education spokesperson said:
“Education is a top priority for this Government which is why we
are investing an extra £2 billion into our schools next year and
the year after. This will be the highest real terms spending on
schools in history totalling £57.3 billion by 2024/25.
“We understand that teacher recruitment is challenging, which is
why we have taken action to raise the profile of this important
and prestigious profession. For teacher trainees in 2023,
bursaries worth up to £27,000 and scholarships worth up to
£29,000 to in key subjects such as chemistry, computing,
mathematics, and physics are available. We also remain committed
to raising the starting salary for teachers to £30,000 next
year.”
For background:
- This academic year, we have confirmed the highest teacher pay
awards in a generation – 8.9 percent for new teachers and five
percent for experienced teachers and leaders.
- We have also asked the STRB, the independent teachers’ pay
review body, to start the process of determining next year’s pay
award, taking into our account our commitment to a £30,000
starting salary.
- We are putting in place world-class training and development,
and our reforms will create a golden thread running from initial
teacher training (ITT) through to school leadership, rooting
teacher and leader development in the best available evidence.
- We will deliver 500,000 teacher training and development
opportunities by 2024, giving all teachers and school leaders
access to world-class, evidence-based training and professional
development at every stage of their career.
- We have announced a Levelling Up Premium worth up to £3,000
tax-free for maths, physics, chemistry and computing teachers in
years 1 to 5 of their careers.
