The SNP has warned “only independence can protect Scotland’s
artists” – as fears grow of mass unemployment within the music
industry due to Brexit.
Former Runirg band member and SNP MP, , has said the UK government
has treated performers “like pawns on a chessboard” during Brexit
negotiations, which has lead to concerns throughout the
industry.
It follows comments raised by drummer Steve Barney in a House of
Lords hearing, who said “every British touring professional” will
face legal challenges as a result of Brexit
bureaucracy.
Commenting, MP said:
“This is the reality of Brexit Britain.
“As a result of the Tories hard Brexit, UK artists have had a
full continent closed off to them.
“Touring, particularly in our neighbouring EU countries, means
everything to artists and helps both Scotland and the UK’s
international reputation - and Brexit is destroying that.
“Instead of treating performers like pawns on a chessboard, the
UK government must rethink their decision to exclude performers
and musicians from work permits and ensure they face no extra
visa costs – or it could be the final curtain for many within the
industry.
“However, regardless of whether the Tories or Labour occupy No.
10, artists will continue to suffer for as long as we remain
outside the European Union.
“With Labour offering no route back into the European Union, and
championing the end to free movement, there can be no doubt that
only independence can protect Scotland’s musicians from the
long-term damage of a dysfunctional, Brexit-obsessed Westminster
system.”
