Labour has laid out further plans to boost the jobs and
industries of the future as part of Labour’s plan for clean power
by 2030.
Labour will support the development of net zero industrial
clusters across the country to boost local economies, protect
existing jobs in heavy industries, and create new ones in the
green technologies of the future.
These net zero industrial clusters will bring together heavy
industries like cement, ceramics, steel, and chemicals, with the
low-carbon technology of the future - carbon capture and storage
and hydrogen - to provide a clean and prosperous future for the
UK's industrial heartlands.
Humber and Teesside, Merseyside, Grangemouth and South Wales will
benefit from the party’s plans to provide up to £1billion more in
funding compared to the Conservative government to decarbonise
industries. This £1bn will come from Labour’s National Wealth
Fund.
Labour Leader will [on Monday] visit a
London university to highlight the UK’s pioneering research on
green transition technology.
As COP27 begins in Egypt, the UK government is dragging its feet
on climate at every turn - putting the future of British industry
at risk by leaving net zero industrial clusters on the
backburner, banning onshore wind and prevaricating on solar.
Labour’s Green Prosperity Plan will slash energy bills for good,
create hundreds of thousands of good jobs, and make the UK energy
secure, while providing global leadership in tackling the climate
crisis. Labour would establish a National Wealth Fund and GB
Energy, a publicly-owned energy company, to invest in the
technologies and the jobs of the future.
This world-leading plan to tackle the climate crisis will harness
the power of Britain’s sun, wind, and waves to deliver good,
secure, high-paid British jobs, cut energy bills and deliver
energy independence for our country, freeing the UK from being
exposed to the fluctuations of the global gas market.
MP, Labour's Shadow Climate Change and Net Zero
Secretary, said:
“There is no time for delay when it comes to the climate crisis –
the biggest long-term issue we face. The Tories have shown us
over the past 12 years that they simply do not understand the
scale of the emergency. If can’t provide leadership on
the world stage, we cannot expect him to lead at home.
“The Labour Party led the way in calling for the energy price
freeze. Our Green Prosperity Plan will establish a National
Wealth Fund and GB Energy to invest in the technologies and the
jobs of the future across Britain - from green hydrogen to
floating wind turbines, gigafactories to new nuclear, clean steel
to tidal power.
“This is a plan that will drive jobs, support industries, tackle
the cost of living, and protect our home for future generations
by tackling the climate crisis. Only Labour has a world-leading
plan for 100% clean power by 2030 - to cut bills, deliver energy
security, create jobs and industries here in Britain, and lead
the world in tackling the climate crisis.
“There is a global race on for the jobs of the future – and
Britain under the Tories is falling behind. That is why we need a
General Election now and a fresh start under Labour.”
