, Senedd Member for South
East Wales, today highlighted the importance of charging electric
vehicles safely following a meeting with the Charity Electrical
Safety First.
Research by the Charity found that almost three quarters of
Electric Vehicle users admit to having charged their vehicles
dangerously due to the absence of local public charging points.
Charging an Electric Vehicle at home is the most convenient way
to charge, but many without off-road parking are unable to do so
safely as they are faced with barriers to installing a dedicated
charging point.
This is particularly the case for those living on terraced
streets or in flats.
Natasha Asghar said:
“The number of plug in vehicles in South Wales East is increasing
with a growth of 42 per cent seen across the first three quarters
on 2021.”
“It is essential therefore that public infrastructure for
electric vehicles must be adequate to cater for the needs of
owners in order to avoid dangerous charging habits in the home.”
“The Welsh Government must take the lead and expand the number of
public charging networks to reduce risky charging practices which
endanger the safety of users.”
“Support must be focused on areas where existing charge point
deployment is particularly low, such as those communities in the
South East Wales valleys where terraced housing is prevalent.”
