Replying to Ian Mearns MP (Labour, Gateshead) on increasing morale among teaching staff, Quintin McKellar (Vice President for UUK and Vice-Chancellor at University of Hertfordshire, Universities UK) referred to the USS pension scheme. He said it was an excellent scheme, better than any he knew of in the private sector. But the total benefits to staff had decreased. It would be wonderful to pay staff more, but the cash was not available.
