Nick Thomas-Symonds comments on UK trade talks with India

Nick Thomas-Symonds MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade, commenting on the UK opening trade talks with India, said:

“India has a huge economy and significant opportunities for additional trade, investment and prosperity here in the UK. In these negotiations, the Government must stand up for UK businesses and workers, prioritising jobs, livelihoods and our economic security. Ministers need to listen to businesses, trade unions, and civil society as they conduct the negotiations, and set out the support they intend to provide to exporters in the UK. 

“Ministers must promote UK standards and lead on the world stage. India’s net-zero target date is 2070, nearly half-a-century away, so binding climate commitments on limiting increases in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees are crucial, as are labour standards in supply chains.”
