Labour criticises government's defence of "struggling" North Sea Oil and Gas producers

Conservative Minister Nadhim Zahawi has today said the government opposes Labour's plan for a one-off windfall tax on North Sea Oil and Gas profits to help hard-pressed families with energy bills. 

Speaking on LBC, he insisted that those corporations are "struggling" despite enjoying big profits from the gas price hike.

Responding, Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury, James Murray MP said:

“The Tories are asleep at the wheel as they drive Britain into a cost of living crisis.

“Rather than supporting hard-working people facing huge energy bill rises, government ministers are pleading poverty on behalf of oil companies who are enjoying record profits.” 

“Instead of more dither and delay, the Tories should immediately support Labour’s fully-funded plans to cut VAT from bills and provide around £200 relief for everyone and up to £600 targeted support for those needing most help through a one-off windfall tax on excessive oil and gas producer profits.”
