Ofgem gives evidence to Lords net zero inquiry

Members will press energy market regulator, Ofgem, on Tuesday 23 November as the House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee continues its inquiry on Ofgem’s role and responsibilities in reaching net zero. 

At 10.30am, the committee will hear from:

• Jonathan Brearley, CEO, Ofgem
• Neil Kenward, Director for Strategy and Decarbonisation, Ofgem

This week’s session takes place against the backdrop of recent events at COP26, where world leaders agreed to 'phase down' not 'phase out' reliance on carbon-based energy. 

The inquiry focuses on Ofgem’s work towards the government’s decarbonisation target of zero emissions by 2050 and scrutinises its objectives and powers to achieve this. 

So far, the committee’s inquiry has gathered evidence from a broad range of witnesses including energy suppliers, network operators, consumer representatives and policy specialists.

Areas the session will cover include Ofgem’s view of the government’s Net Zero Strategy as a policy framework, lessons learned from the recent energy crisis and how to reform the energy supplier model. Committee members will also question Ofgem on their role in helping consumers to make necessary changes for net zero transition, especially given current low levels of customer trust due to energy supply issues.
