In its second session examining the
National Audit Office’s report on Net Zero and Local
Government in England, the Environmental Audit Committee
will be quizzing ministers from the Department for Levelling Up,
Housing and Communities and the Department for Business, Energy
and Industrial Strategy.
In the first session, held earlier
this month, the Committee heard how local authorities need
greater resources and better strategic direction to meet the
overall challenge of net zero, and that many councils are failing
to properly communicate what local people can be doing to improve
the environment.
During Wednesday’s session, the
Committee will be putting these themes to Ministers, with topics
expected to include the role of planning system reform in
achieving net zero and the overall structure of central
government funding available to local authorities to meet the net
zero challenge.
