The Minister for Women and Equalities has today (23
July) begun recruitment for a new Wales Commissioner and a new
board member of the Equality and Human Rights Commission
(EHRC).
The move comes as the tenure of Lord Bernard Ribeiro, one of 13
current EHRC Commissioners, comes to an end in December.
It is expected that appointments will be made in November.
The EHRC is independent statutory body with the responsibility to
encourage equality and diversity, eliminate unlawful
discrimination, and protect and promote the human rights of
everyone in Britain.
The Equality Hub sponsors the EHRC and as a result the Minister
for Women and Equalities has statutory responsibility for
appointing 10 to 15 Commissioners, including the Chair and the
Wales and Scotland Commissioners.
Commissioners are responsible for working with the Chair and
Chief Executive to set the strategic direction of the EHRC;
scrutinise the EHRC’s performance; and support the Chair in
holding the Chief Executive to account.
