A Downing Street spokesman today told lobby correspondents that
will hold a press conference at 5pm from Chequers. It
will focus on "Freedom Day" but he will "have more to say on
limited exemptions for NHS workers."
The spokesman was asked if "nurses deserve a 3% rise." The only
response was that "the process is ongoing and subject to further
consideration."
That response does not rule out a statement today. To repeat what
we were told earlier, the DoH still cannot confirm that an
announcement on nurses' pay will be made today. However, we have
been told privately that "an announcement may be made today" and
that, because the Secretary of State is isolating, it may be a
Written Ministerial Statement.
We expect that Labour will request an Urgent Statement, but the
Speaker's Office may not consider this to be urgent enough to merit
a "late UQ" (at 7pm or 9pm), but would consider a UQ tomorrow.
We will keep you informed of any announcements as soon as they
are available.
