Labour will use an urgent question in the House of Commons today
(Tuesday) to demand the Government prevents further delay to
reopening by introducing an international vaccine passport and
scrapping the amber list.
Labour is also urging the Government to publish all the available
data on the decision-making behind the traffic light system, to
help give people confidence to book holidays and to provide
support for the struggling aviation sector.
Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary will say securing our borders against new variants is
‘the number one thing Ministers can do to protect the reopening’.
Throughout the pandemic, Labour has said economic support must go
hand in hand with public health restrictions. McMahon will urge
the Government to provide support to the aviation sector. This
follows a Day of Action by the travel industry on June 23,
highlighting the need for support to protect the thousands of
jobs are at risk.
Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary, said:
“It’s clear that it will take a long time for the aviation
industry to recover from the fallout of the pandemic.
“Ministers have presided over shambolic management of our borders
and have chosen to turn their backs on the sector and the
thousands of livelihoods that depend on it when support was most
needed.
“Securing our borders against new variants is the number one
thing Ministers can do to protect the reopening.
“Labour wants to see travel reopen and backs an international
vaccine passport and a limited and safe green list. But Ministers
must learn the lessons of the Delta variant.
“They should scrap the Amber List which is still causing
confusion and causing too many people travelling to countries not
deemed safe. And they must publish the criteria surrounding how
they are making decisions on which countries are added to which
lists.
“Labour has consistently called for a sectoral deal that secures
jobs and protects the aviation supply chain. Thousands of jobs
depend on it.”
