The Longer Duration Energy Storage Demonstration innovation
competition is intended to accelerate commercialisation of
innovative longer duration energy storage projects (excluding
commercial solutions such as pumped hydro / lithium ion) at
different technology readiness levels, through
first-of-a-kind (FOAK)
full-system prototypes or actual demonstrations.
This page provides details of the competition, including an
indicative budget and timeline, and some questions and
answers. We expect to publish the full competition guidance
in spring 2021.

Call for expressions of interest
We ran an Expression of Interest which closed on 12 March
2021. If you expressed an interest, you will be notified when
further details are available. The expression of interest was
for planning purposes only. Expressing an interest does not
advantage a supplier or applicant and failing to express
interest does not preclude a supplier or applicant from
applying to any future competition. This expression of
interest notice for Stream 2 was also advertised on Contracts
Finder.
Please send any comments on the proposed competition via
email to smart.innovation@BEIS.gov.uk.
