LGA responds to extra social care funding announcement

Responding to the Government’s announcement of an extra £341 million in infection control funding and testing for social care and £594 million in hospital discharge funding, Cllr Ian Hudspeth, Chairman of the Local Government Association’s Community Wellbeing Board, said:

“Throughout this pandemic, social care services have been on the frontline, doing all they can to protect older and disabled people living in care homes and those receiving care in their own homes.

“It is good that the Government has accepted our joint call with those who work in and use social care to extend this essential funding, so that people can continue to visit their friends and relatives in care settings, safely and securely.

“The extension of discharge funding is also important, providing much-needed certainty for health and care services in their vital ongoing work to support people out of hospital and to receive the right care at home.

“Extra funding support for social care has been crucial in our battle against COVID-19. This also needs to be followed by a long-term, sustainable settlement for adult social care and we urge government to bring forward its proposals as soon as possible.”
