NEU comments on Labour launch of Bright Future Taskforce

“For too long child poverty has been an invisible epidemic in the UK. Even before the pandemic, 4.2 million children – the equivalent of 9 pupils in a class of 30 – were trapped in poverty.

“Coronavirus has shone a light on the reality of poverty across the country - job losses, illness and increased economic pressure has pushed too many families over the brink, limiting the life chances of millions of children and young people. The time for action is now. It is imperative that Government establish a cohesive strategy to eradicate child poverty from the UK. The Prime Minister has spoken of his desire to ‘build back better’ in 2021 – tackling poverty and systemic inequality at the source must be at the heart of our nation’s recovery, to ensure no child is left behind.”
