ASCL comment on university application statistics

“It is great to see that people have been inspired by the heroic work of nurses during the pandemic to follow in their footsteps by applying for nursing courses. We are also delighted about the increase in university applications from 18-year-olds in general, and in particular the fact that this includes more young people from the most disadvantaged areas. This is testimony to the efforts of schools and colleges in giving these students the preparation and confidence to set their sights on university in the most challenging circumstances imaginable.

“However, the fact remains that a much higher proportion of 18-year-olds from the most advantaged areas apply to university than those from the most disadvantaged areas, and the gap is still far too wide. More action is needed to tackle inequality and support education services in areas which face the greatest challenges in order to raise aspiration and attainment, and create a more equitable society for all young people. The government must make this a priority in the aftermath of the pandemic.”
