Stephen Kinnock responds to escalating violence in Myanmar

“The Labour Party strongly opposes the military coup in Myanmar, which represents a flagrant breach of the country’s constitution and fundamentally undermines the democratic right of the people of Myanmar to determine their own future.

“Labour will always stand up for democracy, universal rights and freedoms, and the rule of law – all of which are currently under threat in Myanmar as the police use rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons against peaceful protestors.

“Strong words are no longer sufficient – the UK Government must act now. The Foreign Secretary should immediately introduce new sanctions which target the financial interests of the Myanmar military, and work with international partners to extend the arms embargo against Myanmar. The UK should also formally support the International Court of Justice case of genocide against the Rohingya.”
