ASCL comment on Generation Z mental health report

“It is clear that the pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the mental health and wellbeing of many children, and we fully endorse this report’s recommendation for additional funding for schools to deliver extra support.

“However, the impact of coronavirus has exacerbated a problem that was already of huge concern to school leaders before the pandemic struck, and there has to be a greater focus on children’s mental health going forward.

“This exemplary report shows that many factors contribute to poor mental health, including poverty, the heavy use of social media, and bullying.

“There is a challenge for the government in addressing the stark inequalities which continue to blight so many childhoods, but many of these issues require a wider societal response, and we are keen to work with the government to develop an action plan.”
