Welsh Conservatives: No clear evidence to back Welsh Government’s alcohol ban

“Today, we are calling for an immediate suspension of the severe Wales-wide restrictions being imposed on the hospitality sector.

“While we fully recognise the need for action to control the pandemic and save lives, there is a lack of clear evidence that banning alcohol in pubs, cafes and restaurants across Wales is the best way to achieve this.

“Given the importance of the hospitality industry to Wales and the fact that COVID-19 is circulating at very different rates in different parts of the country a one size fits all approach cannot be justified and will likely lead to unintended consequences such as people risking spreading the virus by meeting for a drink at one another’s homes.

“The Welsh Government must adopt a more targeted approach to tackling the coronavirus that is backed by the evidence, has public support, and protects both lives and livelihoods.”
