Patrick Harvie: COP26 is not about corporate sponsors

Responding to the announcement of the first sponsors for COP16 in Glasgow next year, Glasgow MSP and Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie said:

“It’s telling that the biggest announcements on COP26 are about the corporate sponsors rather any meaningful action the UK needs to take to go into these talks with heads held high. It will be up to the Green movement around the world to ensure that the voices of those most threatened by the climate emergency are the ones heard most loudly.

“The inclusion of firms like SSE, whose award of contracts for its Seagreen windfarm to a firm based in UAE has put the future of Bifab at risk, is a reminder of the UK and Scottish Governments’ collective failure to secure the jobs that should go hand-in-hand with a green recovery. The Scottish Greens’ plan for a Green New Deal would see Governments using all the powers at their disposal to secure a jobs-rich, low carbon future.”
