100 Conservative MPs call for early ban on petrol and diesel cars - Greenpeace reaction

In reaction to news reports that a group of around 100 Conservative MPs have called for an earlier phase out date of 2030 for petrol and diesel vehicles, Greenpeace UK's policy director, Doug Parr, said:

“Bringing the date that we stop selling new petrol and diesel cars and vans forward five years to 2030 may not seem like too big of a deal to many, but it would help cut more carbon than any other plausible action over the next decade. It’s great to see such a large number of Conservative MPs becoming advocates for this, hopefully it encourages more to join the chorus of businesses and civil society saying the same.

“Going for 2030 is also the best way to ensure that the UK’s car industry has a strong and secure future. Other countries, such as Germany have already put their foot down in an attempt to dominate electric car production.The ones who move fastest will reap the economic benefits, and with more than 800,000 people working in the vehicle sector, do we really want to risk having to play catch up?”
