On Monday 16th March, MPs will hold two debates on separate petitions calling on the Government to improve animal rights. The first debate will be on a petition calling for the recognition of animal sentience and requiring animal welfare to be given full consideration by law, which has more than 103,000 signatures. The second debate will be on a petition calling for the Government to ban all cages for farmed animals, which has over 107,000 signatures.
Responding to the petition on animal sentience, the Government said: “We are committed to making the necessary changes required to UK law in a rigorous and comprehensive way to ensure animal sentience is recognised after the UK leaves the EU.”
In response to the petition on banning cages for farmed animals, the Government stated they “share the public’s high regard for animal welfare and the welfare of our farmed livestock is protected by comprehensive and robust legislation.”
The debates will last up to 90 minutes each, and will provide opportunities for MPs to question Government Ministers directly on these issues. The debates will take place in Westminster Hall from 16:30, and will be available to view on Parliament TV.
