Comment on Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announcing diesel/petrol car ban could come into force in 2032

“There is widespread public support for the UK to make the switchover from petrol and diesel cars, over to electric vehicles and zero emissions motoring.

"But the Government is causing some confusion with its policy by drip feeding out ad-hoc amounts of info, or making statements without backing them up with a coherent and credible strategy for the industry.

"It's only been a few days since it was announced the diesel and petrol new car sale ban was being brought forward by five years to 2035. Now Mr Shapps is suggesting a date of 2032 is being considered as a cut off date.

"If the Government is to meet either of these dates, it must throw its full support behind accelerating the UK’s EV infrastructure programme and better-encourage early switching to electric cars through more attractive incentives.

“We need to see less rhetoric from ministers and more action to win over an understandably cautious public that still needs some convincing about adequate public charging points and the cost of buying an electric car."
