Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, , responding to reports
that the Government will cut workers’ rights and environmental
protections from its EU Withdrawal Agreement Bill and that a
no-deal Brexit cannot be ruled out, said:
“This is a sign of things to come from a Government that
will sacrifice our basic rights and certainty for business at the
altar of turning the UK into a Trump-supporting tax
haven.”
"Boris Johnson has already given up the effort to get a
good deal with the EU to leap into the arms of Donald Trump as
soon as possible with a toxic deal to sell out our NHS and food
safety.
“Boris Johnson’s government may go down as the most
dishonest administration in history – and Labour will stand
shoulder to shoulder with the British people to fight it every
step of the way.”
Notes to Editors:
• The draft
Withdrawal Agreement Bill included provisions on workers’ rights
not being weakened after Brexit, and had promised similar
environmental protections (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/boris-johnson-brexit-workers-rights-environment-climate-change-election-a9248611.html),
but it has now been revealed that these protections will not be
included in the legislation to ensure the Bill passes through
Parliament “cleanly and clearly”: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/boris-johnson-brexit-workers-rights-environment-climate-change-election-a9248611.html.
