ASCL response to letter on school food

Commenting on the letter on school food from Nadhim Zahawi, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children and Families, Geoff Barton, General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said:

“We are pleased that the minister recognises that many schools are delivering excellent practice in providing creative and healthy menus, and in making it easy for children to enjoy free school meals without stigma. And we support him in highlighting the standards that we are sure that all parents would expect for their children in this respect.

“The public should be assured that the vast majority of schools already do these things, and indeed go much further by providing food to the many children who arrive at school hungry because of the rising tide of child poverty in our country. The government must do more to address the devastating impact of years of austerity on many families.”
