The new Nation State Law in Israel: realities of life in
a mixed Arab-Jewish city in the ongoing political conflict – the
case of Jaffa
Monday 29th April, 4:30pm-6pm, Committee Room
21, House of Commons
Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to invite you to an event we are holding with
political and social activist Sami Abou Shehadeh to discuss the
current situation faced by Palestinian citizens of Israel.
Political and social activist, Sami Abou Shehadeh will discuss
the current political situation in Israel for Palestinian
citizens of Israel, including the Nation State Law which
institutionalises discrimination against Palestinian citizens of
Israel, and the recent elections, and what both mean in Israeli
towns like Jaffa.
Sami Abou Shehadeh is
a historian and social and political activist from the
Palestinian minority in Israel. From 2010-2013 he was a member of
the Tel Aviv-Yaffa (Jaffa) municipal council. He is an expert on
the modern cultural history of Yaffa, particularly the social
development of the Palestinian community in the region since
1948. Sami has had articles on the modern history of Yaffa and
the political situation of the Palestinian minority in Israel
published in journals and magazines. At present he is the CEO of
the Yaffa Youth Movement Association (YYMA), an NGO that works to
build a strong and inclusive Palestinian community in Yaffa. The
YYMA uses education, cultural expression and access to university
as a key tool to realise this objective, which is important
because marginalised Palestinian youth typically live in very
non-academic environments.
