Scottish Conservatives: North-east MP backs petition on axed Aberdeen-Gatwick route

A north-east MP has backed a petition to reinstate the Aberdeen-Gatwick route that was axed earlier this month.

Budget airline Easyjet blamed a lack of demand for the service, but two frequent flyers are campaigning to bring the service back.

Rachel May, who lives in Newtonhill, launched the petition which was signed by 300 people in just three days.

West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine MP Andrew Bowie has now responded to his constituent and said he would join the campaign.

Mr Bowie, a Scottish Conservative MP, said: 

“Aberdeen’s air links with the South East of England are absolutely vital for businesses and leisure travellers alike.

“The removal of this route has clearly met considerable opposition locally.

“I understand that this was a commercial decision for Easyjet and I appreciate the challenges that airlines face.

“However, I am happy to offer my support to this campaign that was started by one of my constituents.

“If Easyjet will not reverse this decision, then I hope that another operator can be encouraged to step in and fill the gap.

“With the opening of the AWPR, we are starting to see much-needed improvements to transport infrastructure in the north-east.

“A reduction in flights from Aberdeen is a backward step and I would urge regular passengers and local businesses to make their voices heard.”
