Minister gives assurance on digital mapping

Questions in the House of Lords today on restrictions on digitally map towns and cities focussed on Russia's ability to map critical infrastructure in the UK. 

The question was posed by Lord Fox, who pointed that Russian software was being used to pinpoint civil infrastructure. He called for a risk analysis to be carried out.

Lord Young of Cookham, replying for the government, said there were no restrictions on mapping. He had received an assurance that those responsible for critical national infrastructure were not asking for restrictions on commercial mapping. But he pledged to double check the information he had been given.

He added that access to critical national infrastructure was restricted, with Ordnance Survey being the only mapping organisation with access to property for mapping under the Ordnance Survey Act.
