Edinburgh West MP has pressed Brexit
ministers over continued concerns surrounding the availability of
life saving medical supplies in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
Many drugs that are crucial to those with life-long or
life-threatening illnesses, such as insulin dependent
diabetics, are either not manufactured in this country, or
not on the scale which we need.
As the vote on the UK’s withdrawal from the EU draws closer, Ms
Jardine today asked ministers in the House of Commons to outline
contingency plans for the provision of essential medicines in the
event that the UK crashes out with no deal.
The Lib Dem MP commented:
“Yet again when asked about contingency plans to ensure
life-saving drugs are available the minister has only platitudes
and vague assurances.
“People suffering from chronic conditions like diabetes,
arthritis and heart disease are being left in the dark by this
Tory government and I will continue to demand better for them.
“Ministers say there are plans in place, so why don’t they come
forward and share the information that thousands of people need
to feel reassured?
“Have they given any thought at all to the stress this is causing
people? If drugs are being stockpiled, tell us. Let us know if
they are being kept in the correct storage.
“It’s looking ever more likely that ’s botched Brexit deal will be
rejected by Parliament, so the only option left to avoid yet more
uncertainty is to allow the people a vote with the option to
remain in the European Union”.
