Transport Select Committee inquiry: Health of the bus market

Passenger groups and academics face questions on the health of the bus market. The inquiry is examining the reasons for the decline in bus use in England outside London. Buses accounted for 5% of all journeys in the UK in 2016 – the highest percentage for any form of public transport – but annual journeys per person in cities outside the capital have fallen by 40% over the last 25 years.

This session will focus on the reasons behind the drop in passenger numbers, what the priorities should be for bus services and how the future bus market might look. The Committee last week visited Leicester to hear the views of bus passengers.
