Steve Double MP calls on Government to consider a seasonal workers scheme for the tourist and hospitality industry post-Brexit

Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay has today asked the Prime Minister to consider a seasonal workers scheme for the tourist and hospitality industry after Brexit.

Speaking in Prime Minister’s Questions today, Steve said:

“The Government’s announcement of a pilot scheme for seasonal agricultural workers has been warmly welcomed by fruit and vegetable farmers in Cornwall and across the country. However this sector is not the only sector that relies heavily on seasonal migrant workers. The tourism and hospitality sector is very concerned that they will be able to access the seasonal workers they need one we leave the EU.”

“Can the Prime Minister confirm what action the Government is taking to ensure this important sector of our economy continues to be able to access the workforce it will need and would she consider a seasonal worker scheme for the tourist industry?”

In reply the Prime Minister confirmed further details of the overall seasonal immigration policy will be brought forward in due course.

Commenting after the debate, Steve said:

“This is a concern raised often with me by businesses in the tourism and hospitality sector that rely heavily on seasonal migrant workers during the traditional holiday seasons.”

“I was pleased to raise this with the Prime Minister today and I will continue to do all I can to represent them on this and everything else as Brexit draws closer.”
