MP, Shadow Home
Secretary, commenting on the Government's immigration
announcement, said:
"The Government's immigration plans will be meaningless
as long as it continues to adhere stubbornly to its unworkable
and arbitrary migration cap that has never once been
met.
"The cap serves only one purpose and that is to demonise
and vilify people who choose to come and live and work in our
country, and Labour will scrap it.
"Labour will introduce a fair migration system, based on
the needs of our economy, and a new work visa system that
doesn't shut out the health and social care workers that we
desperately need."

The Migration Advisory Committee
chair Professor Alan Manning last month described
the Government's 100,000 net migration cap as
a "political target" not an immigration
policy.

In her most recent speech on Labour's
immigration policy, announced Labour will
establish a new work visa scheme that will
apply across a range of jobs, skills and
professions, giving people the right to live
and work in the UK, and to bring their families here. She
said in her speech: "Our work visa
system will apply to a range of jobs. Not just the ones
the government designates ‘high-skilled’, by which they
mean high paid. This is a ludicrous definition , which
means this government prevents nurses coming here, while
allowing derivatives traders."
